			<title>Welcome to Graz !</title>
			<link>http://www.eubs2008.org/welcomenote.html</link>
<description>Though not too well-known as a tourist resort, Graz is a jewel in many ways.
From the Schlossberg, a hill in the very centre of the town, which
still displays remnants of the ancient fortress, you may enjoy a
splendid view over the famous old town, which has survived so many wars
and has been listed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.

Its Armoury harbours 30000 weapons and armours - the largest collection of medieval arms worldwide.
Elected European Cultural Capital 2003, Graz also displays interesting monuments of contemporary architecture.

Situated in a warm large valley at crossroads between west, east, north
and south, the city - the roots date back to the Romans - has developed
an atmosphere of open-mindedness and of Mediterranean joy of life.
With four universities, the oldest of them was founded in 1585, Graz
accommodates about 37000 students amongst a population of 287000. Its
Jazz faculty is the oldest one in Europe.

The Graz Hyperbaric Centre is part of the ancient Medical University
which today provides beds for 1500 patients. Originally planned as a
two-compartment hyperbaric operation theatre for baby heart surgery in
1965, it is still one of the largest hyperbaric facilities in Central
Europe.
Surprisingly, diving is rather popular in midland Austria. The country
of Styria offers many interesting diving spots in atmospheric mountain
lakes.

We are proud and happy to organize the EUBS Conference 2008.
Come and join us in Graz, capital of Styria, the Green Heart of Austria !

Yours,

  F.-M. Smolle-Juettner, MD

B. Ratzenhofer-Komenda, MD
